i’ve had many people contact me via the interwebz about this year’s baconfest. that’s right! it’s a fest of bacon. so, to answer the recurring question: yes, i am going. i have had this event on my calendar for about four months. they just recently started selling tickets. among the many cool things i’ll get to do at this event, meeting allan benton will be a highlight. it’ll be good to let him know how deliciously he has affected the lives of so many with his bacon. that and eating bacon.

really, is there a better way to spend a weekend? i think not!

december snow

it’s been a while since we’ve had a decent snow in december. we got about four to five inches overnight. the weather reports indicate more white stuff in the near future too. i’m not sure about it’s stick-ability, but i am still excited. i keep hoping we’ll end up with a white christmas this year. of course, i’ve been hoping for that every year, but our odds are better this time around. and with snow before the official winter season, i hoping for a real winter instead of the cold, rainy versions we’ve been experiencing.

the one thing i miss on days like this is a fireplace. the smell of wood burning and the unparalleled warmth cannot be reproduced by anything artificial. i do, however, have freshly ground coffee. if i had some freshly cooked bacon, i’d be set.

my mother asked me what i wanted for my birthday this year. i hadn’t updated my wish list when she inquired, but i already had planned to put the item on the list. this was something on my mind since a friend mentioned as it was an almost gift for me last year. so i told mom, “i want a subscription to a bacon-of-the-month club.”

with several of my pals going in together with my family, i now am going to receive different bacon from the grateful palate each month for the next twelve. some of the different bacons include applewood smoked, peppered, cob smoked, hickory smoked, and maple and alder smoked. (see the full list here: http://www.gratefulpalate.com/?p=Category_12.) i am very psyched! mom presented a box to me with a stuffed pig along with the information about the club.

my sister made one of the best chocolate cakes ever. and to step it up a notch, she sprinkled bacon on top of it. the frosting is super creamy. the cake as moist as if it came right out of the oven, even the next day. and of course, there is the bacon.

another couple of friends also purchased a couple packages of benton’s bacon. i’ve heard about this bacon. it’s a local favorite/phenomenon making some news. they hosted this year’s knoxville bacon fest. i can’t wait to fry this up.

i got a few other items too–i’m set for movies for blockbuster summer season, got some dvds of a favorite series, and my fill of sushi during a dinner out. it was a very good birthday.

just because this was a tax-free weekend doesn’t mean it has to be a bacon-free weekend. saturday morning started with some bacon, pancakes, eggs, bacon, juice, coffee, and bacon.

it’s coffee friday, or for those of you on twitter, #coffeefriday. every couple of weeks, will “gonzo” hortman grabs some java and brings it in. at first, he tried some starbucks. then he moved to a local old city java for the bean brew.

as this tradition grew, i started bringing donuts. krispy kreme, of course. then with the addition of old city java came other goodies like bacon chocolate chip cookies and carrot cakes. this has turned into something i look forward to. right now, i’m sitting here enjoying the moment. but come monday, the countdown to coffee friday will commence again.

it took me a while to get up and get moving this morning. well, not quite moving that much yet. i feel so tired still. but i was able to finally rouse myself after benig awake for two hours to make some breakfast of some blueberry/cranberry pancakes, eggs (over medium), and bacon. i fired up the griddle and made the morning goodness.

the time change this evening will take its toll on me if i don’t get to bed rather early. here is where planning ahead is key.

bacon friday

yesterday was unofficially bacon friday. i took the day and tried various bacon recipes and tried them out to see if they were indeed good or bad ideas. the question exists: can bacon really make other food items better?

my first attempt were the bacon cinnamon rolls. these turned out to taste as good as they sound. if you think they don’t sound good, you have to do a bit of logic: you eat bacon for breakfast, you eat cinnamon rolls for breakfast, both are good, they should be good together. and they are. i approve this recipe.

next was to prep some bacon chili for the evening meal. i couldn’t find a decent recipe for this at foodnetwork.com. so, i modified my old standard recipe and added bacon to the crockpot of chili as it cooked. this turned out well, too, but the bacon flavor wasn’t strong enough. next time, there needs to be a stronger bacon presence. i believe replace one of the two pounds of beef with a pound of bacon will help. breaking the bacon into smaller pieces is also advised.

the final baconized treat was the bacon brownies. these turned out to be fantastic! i recommend this recipe be attempted by all who love brownies and who love bacon. two great tastes together!
