wow, quite the response to this post. some responses:

i've looked for the setting to enable battery visibility and don't find one. i know i have it on another laptop, so maybe it is a battery detection problem. i'll look deeper.

hector, i might give your suggestion a go when i get some down time. i would really like my transparency back. thanks for the tip.

as for those who commented on the powering down principle, i would point out that leaving the desktop on at home gives me access to some files remotely (via ssh) when i need to get to them. even suspend on a desktop shouldn't draw the same amount of power if it is fully up. as for my laptops, i end up plugging them in when i can and while i'm using them. they've gotta be recharged sometime. might as well be when they are in use...and near an outlet. i don't really think we're going to save the planet until we start embracing nuclear power on a wider scale. fusion works for the sun, and solar power is green, so it can't be as bad as people make it out to be. what we need is a mr. fusion. recycling AND nuclear power = win!

Hmm, I have Fedora 15 installed on a laptop, and it does show a battery indicator in the toolbar as expected. Seems like you hit a bug :)

You should have battery icon. At least I have on my laptop. I think there is a setting somewhere of when you want this to be visible (for instance if it's full charged, etc).

I *always* shut down my desktop, is at work and here all computers get shut down over night: power consumption, noise, heating... Also, many things may happen if you leave an electronic device powered and not monitored (lightning storm outside damaging electronics - i saw that, power failure followed by a surcharge and burning the device - saw that too and many others)

> "no battery indicator on the top bar. really? seems kinda backwards when they want a more suspend-able mindset only to not show you how much juice you have left. someone wasn’t thinking on this point. i know some themes have it, but this should have been out-of-the-box included."

It is 'out-of-the-box included'. You're encountering a bug, and should file it.

Probably your battery is not detected properly or something? Because on my laptop, the battery status icon is there, by default.

> for a desktop, who shuts those down anymore
> unless you have to unplug it or open it up
> for maintenance.

Save the planet and your power bill - the 30 seconds waiting for it to boot up is worth the 10 hours overnight power usage.

I have an M11X running Fedora 15, and it has a working battery indicator side by side with the WiFi Signal indicator.

About the transparency, as a temporary solution, try to update to rawhide versions of clutter and mutter. Believe me, it won't f*** everything.
