		<description><![CDATA[the xfce4-terminal is a nice one, but i tend to rely on the color profiles to help me identify which window is connected to which  server at a glance. if xfce4-terminal supported different colors in separate terminal windows, it would be my weapon of choice.]]></description>

Did you ask why it was removed?

GNOME Terminal recently moved from GConf to GSettings. The migration took several cycles, the profile handling had to be rewritten, etc...

Could it be that transparency is merely a temporary casualty of that migration? That is, it never was a deliberate decision to remove it, just a case of not having time to reimplement it before the release of 3.8?
